How Editorial Service Works
This is a glimpse at how the manuscript review, booking, and editorial services process works for most clients. For more details, check the FAQ page.
1
Fill out the contact form
Start by filling out the contact form for editing services. All new clients receive a manuscript review. I only complete a few manuscript reviews for new clients each month, so filling out the contact form will put you directly onto my priority notification list for manuscript reviews.
2
Check your inbox
I use HoneyBook for client management, and sometimes their emails can be sent to your spam folder. Be sure to check! After filling out the contact form, you'll receive an email from me with details about my availability for manuscript reviews.
3
Receive a manuscript review
A manuscript review gives me the chance to look over your entire manuscript and provide immediate feedback and accurate suggestions for the type of editorial services your manuscript may need. It is always the first step to receiving further editorial services from me.
4
Review editorial feedback
Look over the comments, suggestions, and feedback contained in your manuscript and the editorial letter from your manuscript review. If at this stage I suggest more substantive or developmental edits, I'll point you in the direction of high quality and trusted colleagues.
5
Put together an editorial package
Once you've looked over the manuscript review feedback, and you feel that I share the same vision as you for your book, and you'd like me to edit your book, we'll discuss putting together a service package that best fits your needs. Editing package payments can be split into two installments, or we can discuss putting together a payment plan to spread out payments and editorial work over a longer period of time.
6
Book services
To book editorial services, I will send you a booking file with a proposal summarizing the details of service and pricing, as well as a standard service agreement and invoice for the first payment. The service agreement must be signed and the first payment received in order to book services.
7
The work begins
If you have made changes since your manuscript review, make sure to resubmit your full manuscript via the HoneyBook client portal along with any previously created style sheets (if the book has received other editing services). Otherwise, line- and copyediting work will begin on the specified date in the agreement. Turnaround time varies based on complexity and length of the manuscript and the service being completed, as well as whether the client is on a payment plan. On average, client's can expect a turnaround time of 2-6 weeks.
For clients with a package of line- and copyediting and proofreading, the line- and copyedited document will be returned upon completion of editing. The client is expected to revise and accept/reject changes within an agreed upon amount of time before returning the document for proofreading services.
8
Final payment and manuscript returned
Once all services are complete, the final payment is due and the manuscript is returned to the client. Clients will still need to accept/reject changes for proofreading service.
9
Follow up
Check your inbox one last time for a short client satisfaction survey and an opportunity to leave a testimonial. Clients will also be able to subscribe to my email list at this time for future business and editing news and updates.
